SURFER HISTORY
Phil started at the age of 5 with his twin brother Anthony. Always competing against each other, their friendly rivalry has developed a competitive and extremely focused nature, which drives Phil to improve on a daily basis, whether it is surfing, tennis or golf.
The 25 year-old twin from Tomakin on the NSW south coast has been gracing the surfing spotlight since he was 12. Phil joined the O&E Team aged 14 years. After an incredibly successful junior career Phil chased World Qualification Series points determined to make the elite top 44.
To earn his place on the 2002 World Championship Tour, after a relatively slow start to the WCT season with four 33rd finishes Phil finally found momentum on the perfect right-hander of J-Bay (SAfr) to finally make several rounds into quarterfinals. Next tournament at Lower Trestles, California, he reached the quarterfinals. A powerful surfer suited to bigger waves, he secured another 9th when Mundaka offered some juice. A final’s berth in the 6-Star WQS event at Portugal provided a further highlight, and his strong quarterfinal showing at Haleiwa, Hawaii, ensured re-qualification.
Phil secured his spot in the 2003 WCT after requalifying through the WQS. This year on the WCT Phil has stepped up a notch. In France for the Quiksilver pro, Phil finished second to Andy Irons. The following week in the Billabong Pro at Mandaka, Phil pinned Andy back by knocking him out of the event in the first Round! Phil finished the event in 9th position.
2004 saw Macca claim two 2nd place finishes, one in France and another in Mundaka
For the last two events of the season Phil headed to Hawaii. In the Xbox Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters, Phil finished in 3rd position beating Kelly Slater and helping Andy towards his 2nd World Title. Phil finished the WCT year in 13th position.
In between his gruelling WCT and WQS contest schedule Phil has managed to increase his profile throughout the global surfing community. He has featured in the Australian, American, European and Japanese surf media and through Ocean and Earth advertising and editorial coverage.
